Alex Kent: a multidisciplinary specialist with over 40 years of experience in Japanese language translation and culture, a lifelong interest in woodworking, and an appreciation for adventure by bicycle.
From my first year-long stay in 1982, I fell in love with Japan.
My interest in Japan informs all three of my service areas: Japanese language services, woodworking, and escorted bicycle tours in Japan.
I began my study of the Japanese language at Middlebury College and Columbia University in 1978. Since then, I’ve had a decades-long fascination with Japan and I have spent a total of nearly six years living there. I began providing Japanese language services (translation and interpretation) around 1990. My many years of experience with Japan’s language, culture, and society enable me to facilitate mutual understanding across cultures.
My passion for woodworking began in early childhood: my first (marginally) useful project was a fire engine-red bench for my bedroom. More recent (and more useful) projects have included bookcases, deck rebuilds, access ramps, dining tables, and kitchen remodels.
To me, the bicycle is far more than sporting equipment; it’s a tool for freedom. Since my early days of exploring Japan by bicycle nearly 40 years ago, I’ve realized that the bicycle is one of the best ways to see a place. Today, I return to the country whenever I can. I especially enjoy sharing my love of Japan with other cyclists.
